2nd Spongy Moth Areal Treatment
The Department of Agriculture will be making their second application of BTK to eradicate the spongy moth in the Steamboat area. Spraying will take place at dawn (or as soon as it is light enough in the morning) on Thursday, May 16th.
The second spray will happen prior to 8:00 AM. The Department of Agriculture WILL NOT spray around the school between 8:00 AM and 9:00 AM. Although BTK (the spray) poses very low risk to humans, pets, birds, fish, and bees. The playground equipment will be cleaned prior to first recess at 9:40 AM.
Thank you for your patience!

Mr. Ehresmann's 5th grade class had the amazing opportunity to visit the Museum of Flight in Seattle today!!

TK (transitional kindergarten) students in Mrs. Hutnik's class invited a "Special Person" to recognize today. Students sang for their special person and shared snacks. They also got to hear a little bit about each special person in the room.
Thank you TK Students !

Dear Griffin Families & Staff:
Here are more specific details about the Spongy Moth Eradication Process. Spraying will take place at dawn (or as soon as it is light enough tomorrow morning). Spraying will happen prior to 8:00 AM. The Department of Agriculture WILL NOT spray around the school between 8:00 AM and 9:00 AM. They will spray one time tomorrow unless they have to refill to finish the area. The helicopter will be about 100 to 200 ft above the treetops. You may or may not see the helicopter flying around today. They are conducting reconnaissance flights.
This event will be over prior to the start of school. The spray (“BTK”) poses very low risk to humans, pets, birds, fish and bees. BTK is found naturally in the environment and has an excellent safety record while also being effective for spongy moth eradication. Although the risk to humans is low, as a precaution, DOH recommends that people who wish to minimize their exposure to the spray remain indoors with doors and windows closed during spraying and for 30 minutes afterward. Because the spray can be a little sticky, the playground equipment will be cleaned prior to first recess at 9:40 AM. In the event that spraying does not happen at the time specified, we do have contingency plans for indoor recess. The next scheduled spray date is tentatively set for Wednesday, May 15th.
Thank you for your patience!

We wrapped up the last of the Student Forums today. Students met with each of the three finalists for Superintendent this week. They asked several great questions to each candidate for example . . . "What do you think about after school activities like different types of clubs, sports, math or maybe even bringing back science, the science fair and STEM?"
--Laileeauna Hartfield Keith. We hope you can join us for the last community forum with Mrs. Orr this evening at 5:30 PM in the Library.

5th grade is enjoying a field trip to the Leopold F. Schmidt House in Tumwater thanks to an invitation from the Daughters of the American Revolution. The beautiful Schmidt House is listed on the National Register of Historic places.

The Griffin School District announced three finalists for Superintendent today following preliminary interviews. The interviews were observed by as many as 30 people online. The Board selected six candidates from a pool of 12 applicants to move forward to preliminary interviews prior to selecting three finalists.
Finalist 1 is currently Assistant Superintendent in Peninsula School District. Dan Gregory is a 33-year educator with several years as a secondary mathematics teacher and later as a building administrator serving as Principal and Assistant Principal in two districts. Mr. Gregory also taught at the American International School in Lagos, Nigeria. He has experience in creating partnerships with local community organizations. Mr. Gregory also has experience with implementation of several district-level initiatives in Peninsula.
Finalist 2 Dr. Cindy Orr is the Executive Director for the Idaho Department of Juvenile Corrections in Boise. She has held a variety of positions including Elementary Principal in Kuna, Idaho and Associate Professor of Innovations of Learning at Northwest Nazarene University. She began her career in education as an elementary teacher in 1991 and was a leader in that role immediately. She oversees three high schools that are housed within detention facilities in Idaho. These schools are in different parts of the state. She looks forward to leading in a school where she can be more connected to staff and students on a daily basis.
Finalist 3 Kirsten Rue serves as Director of Student Achievement for the North Thurston School District. She has a career that began in 1997 as a high school teacher in the Olympia School District and progressed to building level leadership positions in North Thurston. She has experience with programs that provide opportunities for all learners and build social and emotional learning skills. She has experience with serving the needs of children and families from diverse backgrounds through restorative practices and multi-tiered systems of support.
All three candidates expressed a desire to collaborate with the community and build relationships. Each has experience leading many of the programs currently in place at Griffin School. Board Chair Julie Osterberg commented, “The Board appreciates the time that all of the candidates put into completing the application and interview process.”
Each candidate will be interviewed on a separate day and will be interviewed by students, staff and the community. Community forums will be in the Library at Griffin School. Forums will begin at 5:30 p.m. and last until 6:30 p.m. when candidates will be interviewed by the Board in executive session.
Final interviews will cap a two-month process that provided several opportunities for public participation. The Board anticipates selecting a new Superintendent by April 19th.
